History

The area has a unique history. It was originally settled in the 16th to 18th centuries by Early Spanish settlers. In the 1800s, it became a shellfish-gathering community. In the early 1900s, it was transformed into a retirement home for wealthy northerners. In the 1920s, it became a destination for vacationers from around the world. 

Farmland was once the site of South Beach. Henry and Charles Lum bought 165 acres (67 ha) of land in 1870 to plant coconuts. The first beach home was erected in 1886 by Charles Lum. The Lum brothers left the island in 1894, leaving the plantation in the hands of John Collins, who arrived at South Beach two years later to conduct a survey. In 1907, he expanded his property from 14th Street to 67th Street after locating freshwater.

Today, South Beach is one of Florida’s most popular destination spots. It is known for its white-sand beaches, art deco architecture, nightlife, and restaurants. The area has been transformed from a retirement community to a fashionable destination spot for tourists from around the world.
