Miami Beach History

Henry and Charles Lum, father, and son, bought land on Miami Beach for 75 cents an acre in 1870. The first structure to be built on Miami Beach was the Biscayne House of Refuge, constructed in 1876 by the United States Life-Saving Service through an executive order issued under President Ulysses S Grant. The house was used as a refuge for shipwrecked sailors and later served as a Coast Guard station. The city was incorporated on March 26, 1915.

Carl Fisher is credited with transforming Miami Beach into a resort destination. Fisher dredged the bay to make it deeper and built a number of bridges to connect the island to the mainland. In the 1920s, Miami Beach underwent a large transformation. It was during this time that the city’s Art Deco District developed. Architectural styles from this period can still be seen in the area today.

Since its early days, the city has come a long way and is now a popular tourist destination. It is also a popular place to live, with many people from all over the world calling it home.
